Going to War in Winter.
As you probably well know, the Uranus/Saturn square is the biggest event of this year and the next. Within 2021, January, July and November are three of the most charged months of the year. The reason for that is that these are the three months that Mars, is in strong aspect to the ongoing Uranus/Saturn square. For the first week of July, Mars is squaring Saturn, and opposing Uranus, forming what’s called a T-square. We can get a feeling for the strong energies of this event by introducing their archetypal names: Mars – The War God, the Lesser Malefic. Saturn – The Greater Malefic. Uranus – the God of Earthquakes and Lightning Bolts.
January was the last time these three planets interacted, and for that newsletter, I said it was like throwing a lit match into a pile of fireworks. January was an explosive month for many reasons, especially in the US. Now, Mars has returned, but this time with even more tension through the T-square, and this time I call it going to War in Winter, which might sound strange because Summer just started for many of us. Let me explain.
Imagine literally having to go to war in winter. Everyone’s hands are shaking. Frost bite is setting in. It’s even harder to get any sleep. Stress levels are through the roof. Mars like’s heat, movement, and acceleration. Saturn likes to slow things down, strategize, and keep in control. This feels like accelerating with the brakes on. War is a way of tapping into the archetypal field of Mars because it’s about bravery, courage, confidence, hunters, prey, conflict, abuse, and competition. Saturn rules Capricorn, the sign of Winter. Saturn is the planet of wisdom, maturity, hard work, resolve, reality checks, control, blockage, depression, loneliness. These planets are very different, but what they have in common is that they challenge us to rise above our potential, but that pressure often buckles us, hence why they have a bad reputation. We complicate this further with the T-square, where the extremes on either end of the polarity of potentials are accentuated. I actually expect this month to be even more dramatic than January, which is hard to believe, but we will see what happens.
Astrologers generally dread this combination of planets above all else, and have tales of horror to back up their foreboding tones. I’m sure many of them are true, but as always, there’s always a higher ground. No planets are inherently bad or good, but some do provide deeper challenges. First, we recognize the ultimate goal of the Saturn/Uranus square is to accomplish the Great Work of maturing into a world who’s ready to take off some shackles of the past (Saturn), and embrace a newer, more evolved way of being and living (Uranus). This month we can make headway towards that lofty goal by leveraging Mars in Leo, and facing our fears around self-expression.
We will also see a lot of dark side Mars in Leo aggressive self-righteousness from either side of the Uranus/Saturn potentials (freedom seekers vs. control seekers). There will be a lot of both light and dark manifestations, but most of what we will be made aware of is the darker side since we live in a culture of fear, and it’s the drama that gets advertised. The good news is that within the spectrum of possibilities, there will always be both light and dark, and since humanities frequency is on the rise, the good will ultimately outweigh the bad, even though it might not feel that way.
What about in your own personal growth and evolution? Pay close attention to where Leo is in your own birth chart, because that’s where Mars will be transiting through. Wherever Mars is in your chart, is where you are meant to sharpen your will and develop your courage. Whatever house its in, and what planets it’s interacting with, will give you clues about in what area of your life you’re meant to take action, and expand your comfort zones. If you do that, you will gain headway in that arena of life, but also emerge on the other side stronger and braver than you were before, which is the goal.
Also, be aware if you have a strong influence of fixed signs in your chart as well, because since Mars is in Leo, it will also be contacting Taurus, Aquarius, and Scorpio. For fixed sign dominant people, this month is especially important in their evolutionary journeys. How exactly? Impossible to say without seeing the chart specifics, but always with Mars, it’s about raising our consciousness by strengthening that Warrior archetype within.
The mantras for the month:
I face my fears to evoke courage.
I’m strong in the face of hardship.
These are the core evolutionary intentions, with the goal always – to expand our consciousness.

Cheers, always good stuff!
Dear Bryan, thank you so much for your work, and insights into each month´s dynamics. These help us navigate through the mutant challenges we are living. I have a request: can you please indicate where to read as to why Mars, as the God of war, is the “lesser malefic”, whilst Saturn is the “greater malefic”? With gratitude.
I recently discovered you & I love your uniquely insightful intelligence. I’m an artist who’s been having prophetic dreams since childhood (e.g. I foresaw the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in a recurring nightmare until age 6) & recently my dreams have blinked out & been replaced by intense waking visions. The 1st one came when I returned to my body from a wildly vivid visualization. No room for details here, but I’d like to email you the drawing of the ghostly man who freaked out when he realized I could actually SEE him. Is there an email in which I can send the image to you? I promise you will be intrigued, & maybe you have some insight into WTF it is. Sincerely, Nina… an unusual Triple Aquarius.
